Welcome to the Bike MS: Bike to Jack and Back Motorcycle Marshal Program!

Note: Shift times may vary based on ride start and end times.

Thank you for your commitment and dedication to Bike MS. As you prepare for your role, we want to clarify some important guidelines to ensure the safety and smooth operation of our event. 

The Bike MS: Bike to Jack and Back Motorcycle Marshals play a critical role in the safety and success of the event.  The primary mission of the Motorcycle Marshals is monitoring the welfare of bicycle riders along the route, rendering aid to riders in distress, and alerting Net Control of more serious cases.  Additionally, Motorcycle Marshals provide communications, alert Net Control about accidents or other hazards on the route, and other duties as needed. Many MotorcycleMarshals help bicycle riders change flat tires and other minor bicycle repairs. 

Motorcycle marshals are not permitted to direct traffic under any circumstances. Adhering to these guidelines is essential, and your careful attention to this matter is greatly appreciated, as it helps ensure everything runs smoothly and according to the necessary guidelines. 

The National MS Society will require all motorcycle volunteers to submita copy of vehicle insurance and a copy of their operator's driver license. 

Motorcycle Marshals must be at least 25 years old, have a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement, and proof insurance covering the motorcycle to be ridden the weekend of the event. Motorcycle Marshals often ride at low speeds (15-20 mph) in close proximity to bicycles, so good motorcycle handling skills at these speeds are essential.  

Motorcycle Marshals are required to wear DOT-approved helmets and jackets. Motorcycles ride in close proximity to bicycles, so no trailers are towed behind them.

Shuttle participants along the route. Proof of current driver's license and automobile insurance required. Background check required. Indicate if HAM Radio operator.

Standing at the finish line to cheer on participants, using noise makers, etc. Volunteers can bring encouraging signs or cheering swag from home to the event (but not required)

Ride Marshals are registered cyclists who act as both Good-Will and Safety Ambassadors for Bike MS. Ride Marshal applicants must be 18 years of age, be passionate and knowledgeable about safe cycling, and be willing to work with fellow cyclists to promote safe cycling. Ride Marshals must have completed at least two Bike MS events within five years.

Activities Include: Setting up/taking down the site, running hydration/fruit stations, serving food and beverages to participants, providing excellent support to riders and customer service. (Occasional lifting may be required) 

Setting up/taking down the site (may include tents, tables, chairs, and additional support uploading the supply truck), running hydration (may include mixing sports beverages where applicable) area and serving food to participants (single serve where possible); encouraged to bring decorations and signs to cheer on riders as they enter your stop

Medical Support Volunteers hold a minimum CPR/First Aid certification and are often medical professionals, ie. EMT, EMS, RN, LN, CNA, MD, etc. Medical Support Volunteers assist riders needing basic medical attention and assist in triage process.

Unloading and distributing supplies, setting up tents, tables, and chairs, hanging banners and signage, decorating tents and tables (heavy lifting may be required)

Using personal photography equipment, start & finish line photos, route photos, & festival area photos. Volunteer Photographers are expected to share full rights to digital media with the MS Society in-kind.

Checking in volunteers, ensuring paperwork is turned in and volunteers receive a t-shirt and instructions for their volunteer shift.

Volunteer massage therapists must provide a digital copy of their massage licensure and insurance. If the team of therapists are all covered under one insurance umbrella (a company, etc.) then a copy of that policy will suffice. Massage therapists use touch to treat and alleviate participants’ injuries and fatigue as well as promote general wellness.

Therapists will be able to charge $20 for each 15 minute massage. Collecting payments is the responsibility of each Massage Therapist. 

Assist with the supervising of food cooked on site to ensure it meets health requirements. Assist with organizing the serving process of the food.

*Must have a Food Handlers Permit
