Welcome to the Bike MS: Bike to Jack and Back Motorcycle Marshal Program!

Thank you for your commitment and dedication to Bike MS. As you prepare for your role, we want to clarify some important guidelines to ensure the safety and smooth operation of our event. 

The Bike MS: Bike to Jack and Back Motorcycle Marshals play a critical role in the safety and success of the event.  The primary mission of the Motorcycle Marshals is monitoring the welfare of bicycle riders along the route, rendering aid to riders in distress, and alerting Net Control of more serious cases.  Additionally, Motorcycle Marshals provide communications, alert Net Control about accidents or other hazards on the route, and other duties as needed. Many MotorcycleMarshals help bicycle riders change flat tires and other minor bicycle repairs. 

Motorcycle marshals are not permitted to direct traffic under any circumstances. Adhering to these guidelines is essential, and your careful attention to this matter is greatly appreciated, as it helps ensure everything runs smoothly and according to the necessary guidelines. 

The National MS Society will require all motorcycle volunteers to submita copy of vehicle insurance and a copy of their operator's driver license. 

Motorcycle Marshals must be at least 25 years old, have a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement, and proof insurance covering the motorcycle to be ridden the weekend of the event. Motorcycle Marshals often ride at low speeds (15-20 mph) in close proximity to bicycles, so good motorcycle handling skills at these speeds are essential.  

Motorcycle Marshals are required to wear DOT-approved helmets and jackets. Motorcycles ride in close proximity to bicycles, so no trailers are towed behind them.

Welcoming participants, ensuring luggage is properly tagged, checking participants' luggage in/out of secured area,  lifting and moving duffle bags, tents, coolers and luggage cases, providing excellent customer service. (lifting required ≤ 20 lbs.)

Standing at the finish line to cheer on participants, using noise makers, handing out medals/mementos, often these volunteers are asked to bring encouraging signs or cheering swag from home to the event.

Assist with loading, unloading, and transporting food, tents, signage, and event supplies to various event locations. Volunteers will help set up and break down event sites, keep materials organized, and ensure all locations are properly equipped for participants.

Assist with setting up and placing signage throughout the event to help guide riders safely and provide clear directional support.

Volunteer massage therapists must provide a digital copy of their massage licensure and insurance. Massage therapists use touch to treat and alleviate participants’ injuries and fatigue as well as promote general wellness.

Provide riders with their bib, bike and helmet stickers, and other pertinent event supplies (VIP credentials, wristbands, etc.) if they have not received them at a pre-event packet pickup. Riders may visit the Registration area of this tent for same-day ride registration. (Background check required for volunteers handling donations)

Responsibilities/ Requirements Include:

*All Motorcycle Marshals are required to wear a helmet

*If you are First Aid/CPR certified and would be willing to provide First Aid support on route. Please add to the comment section when registering. 

*Encouraged to be active amateur radio operators with VHF/UHF HAM radio capability on the motorcycle and a cellular phone for backup communications.

*Motorcycle Marshals must have a valid motorcycle driver's license and proof of insurance covering the motorcycle to be ridden in Bike MS. Both must be sent to the MS Society in advance of your shift.

*Current policy does not allow sidecars or trailers towed behind the motorcycle. 

*HAM license and the ability to operate from your motorcycle are encouraged.
